Liberty HomeCare & Hospice Services offers a new innovative treatment for dysphagia (swallowing difficulty) for patients served by several of its locations. VitalStim therapy combines electrical stimulation and exercises to improve the ability to swallow.
By restoring or increasing swallowing function, VitalStim allows patients to communicate and eat more easily. Liberty therapists use a safe, non-invasive electrical current to stimulate motor nerves in the neck, causing muscles to contract. When combined with swallowing exercises, the procedure retrains the throat and brain to swallow properly.
VitalStim therapy is not recommended for patients with severe neck infections, seizures, implanted electronics (such as a pacemaker), or significant nerve or muscle damage. However, most Liberty patients have found the therapy to be a remarkable advancement. Studies show VitalStim not only offers a high rate of success, but sustained results.
